From Concrete Jungle to Expansive Horizons: A Dance of Contrasts

Born in Hong Kong, Lawrence was immersed in a city defined by its fast-paced, ever-evolving urban landscape. Later relocating to the expansive deserts of the American Southwest, he found himself confronted by the striking contrast between urban density and natural vastness, which profoundly influenced his journey as a contemporary dance artist, filmmaker, and photographer. This duality serves as the foundation of his work—an exploration of how environments shape the psychological tapestry of people, culture and the human experience.

As a photographer and filmmaker, Lawrence possesses a keen eye for detail and pattern in the world around him. Inspired by diverse landscapes, urban architectures, and the environments we inhabit, he delves beneath the surface to uncover the hidden stories that often go unnoticed, creating works that resonate on both aesthetic and emotional levels.

Fusion of Ballet and Breaking: Crafting a New Dimension

Lawrence’s choreography bridges the worlds of ballet and breaking, often perceived as occupying opposite ends of the dance spectrum. By integrating the structured elegance of ballet with the raw energy of breaking, he brings these forms into a harmonious fusion that exists in a new dimension without contextual boundaries.

Reinvention: From Dancer to Storyteller

As an emerging artist, Lawrence's journey is one of constant reinvention, evolving from modern dance artist to visual storyteller. In 2019, he founded Kraken Still and Film, a contemporary dance company built on collaboration and creative diversity. Working with a dynamic range of artists—including composers, fashion designers, visual artists, painters, and dancers from various training backgrounds—Lawrence creates unique, project-based dance works that blend artistic disciplines.

Lawrence is available to Collective members looking to bring their visions to life through photography, videography, and dance.
